A woman named Ann (not her real name) that I knew took care of her niece for over 8 years of her young life, while her dis-functional mother was not in a position to care for her.
Ann assumed this was going to be her life’s work, but became sad and despondent, even a bit angry when the young niece decided to go back and live with her mother. Ann felt that all of her hard work and sacrifice had been for nothing. We talked and Aesop’s quote came up. “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” Ann’s whole attitude changed and she realized that she had also gained from raising her niece. There were many challenges along the way that helped develop her niece’s character, as well as her own. Most importantly, there were joyous moments when Ann felt love from her niece. Ann’s kindness was not wasted.
