My favorite movie is “The Wizard of Oz”. It captures wonderment, love, friendship and healing. The movie carries many life metaphors for me, however, as a child, I just liked it.
Yellow brick road-your path in life, you have choices Scarecrow-you may “think” you aren’t enough, but you are Tin Man-your “heart” may feel tender and broken, without feeling, but there is a way to heal Lion-you may lack “courage” and feel afraid, but one small step in the right direction will make all difference Home-wherever you find love Dorothy-nurtured her group of characters, believed in them, had the power all along, but didn’t know it Ruby slippers-represented the source of power, everyone’s source is different, yours is within you Wicked Witch-adversity and challenge is part of life, like it or not Glenda Good Witch-someone in your life can give you direction when you feel lost, someone that champions you The characters in the Wizard of Oz lacked their heart’s desires. They each had wishes for a better self. The characters were trying to find help in all the wrong places-the scarecrow thought he needed a brain, the lion thought he needed courage, the tin man thought he needed a heart, Dorothy thought she needed a way to get home. The brain, courage, heart, way to get home were just things, when really each found the strength and power within as they worked through difficulties and challenges together. The real point of the movie is about self-belief. The characters often embodied the traits they thought they lacked and were blinded from seeing their true potential. How alike are we to the characters? The wizard gave out badges and certificates to the lion, scarecrow and tin man, however, those objects couldn’t have given them the things they desired unless that power was already there within them. It took Glenda, the good Witch of the North, to help Dorothy see that she had the power all along to get home. You have the power within you too! Do you have a favorite movie that has meaning for you?
